Selection Assessment Services
CEM have been developing selection assessments since 1999. We now deliver both paper and computer-based services to a broad range of schools, trusts and authorities, for children predominantly of ages 10 to 11 years.
Our approach
Our aim is to develop assessments that are resistant to prepping and provide as standardised an environment as possible. Into this framework we then present content that assesses performance in verbal, numerical and non-verbal reasoning. Our interpretation of verbal reasoning is broad and includes comprehension and reading skills.
A range of assessments
Our assessments can be tailored for each school or authority. In general we take 2-3 years to fully develop the content and service for an entirely new system. To complement this work we also provide a generic online package (GETINTU), which is now used by a broad range of independent schools.
GETINTU
What is involved?
Having registered and signed a service level agreement, your school can download the assessment software onto your school’s local area network. The software uses Adobe Flash Player to deliver the questions, which allows for audio and animation to be incorporated into the assessments.
The assessment is made up of several sections that change on an annual basis. These sections cover literacy, numeracy and non-verbal reasoning. The test is usually completed in under an hour.
Feedback
Feedback is simple and provides the ability to rank your candidates. A total score and sub-scores are provided. No national norms are available.
We recommend that schools inform candidates and parents of our familiarisation web site. This provides the candidates with basic information such as the look and feel of the test and the manner in which you can complete questions: http://www.intuproject.org/demos/entrance
Our Paper tests
We develop paper tests and would be happy to talk to anyone interested in this format. In general we provide a service with the following aspects in common:
- We provide a sample sheet the aims of which are:
- To provide candidates and parents the chance to be informed of the process.
- To enable a candidate to gauge the look and feel of the tests.
- Inform candidates of the manner of answering questions.
- The time and content of invigilation is standardised through the provision of an audio soundtrack.
- We divide each assessment into specifically timed sections, to best reflect the balance of cognitive ability being tested.
- Each new section is introduced using examples as well as informing the candidate of the time they have available.
- Provide papers that are uniquely identifiable. Candidates write directly onto the papers.
- Age standardise the results and provide a breakdown of scores.
- We provide no practice materials to minimise prepping.
